Off to the Races – and Agent lists April 7, 2009

Well, the egg races anyway. It’s both Spring Break for the critters and Easter weekend so we’re driving to Grandpa’s house. Four hours in the car with a laptop, headphones and soda for me, and a DVD players and headphones for the kids. I’m hoping this will be a good crunch for my WIP and for some rewrites I’ve got to tackle.
In other news someone asked me where I found my list of agents. Truthfully my list of agents to query has come out of a lot of research. I spend time on Publishers Lunch and otherwise Googlefuing my way to lists, but the best place is from authors. Many authors mention their agents in their acknowledgment pages or on their websites. So I always check both places to see who’s representing some of my favorite folks. By knowing that, for example, Nancy Yost reps Ilona Andrews I have a feel for what kind of pieces she might like. A little internet research took me to her homepage and gave me her submission guidelines which I add to my agent file. It’s not always easy, but it works. Author blogs are another great reference spot as they’ll talk about agents they’ve run into at cons or worked with sometimes. So the answer I have to the question is that I keep my eyes peeled everywhere I go. And my list is none too shabby.
