I know today is Book Review Wednesday.  I keep looking at the day and I know…but…my brain is just not in the right place.  So tomorrow will be book review day.  Today is party day!

A bit of housekeeping and a contest…cause we love contests!

Housekeeping first.  One of our lovely friends has started a book blog and we think you should check her out.  Jane’s Safari.  Go forth and be enlightened.

CONTEST: This month is my birthday.  No I’m not telling you how old I am, go away.  However, this puts me in a celebratory mood.  Soo…I’m giving away a birthday present on Monday the 12th, which will consist of two books being released in October: On the Edge from Ilona Andrews and The Mermaid’s Madness by Jim C Hines.  These are a couple of authors I love, and it’s a good time to introduce them to others.  Not that this is an inclusive list of all the goodies I’m drooling over this month, but it’s a start.

So in celebration today and every day until midnight on Sunday, come and chat with us in the comments.  Tell us what book you’re looking forward to, or what birthday memory sticks out to you!  Say Hi.  We don’t bite.

Well…  Not much anyway.

Jana

Happy birthday (you young thing, you).
I am looking forward to Alex Bledsoe’s new book (the first one in the series was The Sword-Edged Blonde…can’t remember the new one). And Jim’s new book, of course!
And I just read Mindy Klasky’s brand new release, How Not To Make a Wish–and it ROCKED!

Missy S - October 7, 2009

Deborah – the second one is Burn Me Deadly… yes, another good one to look forward to!!

2. Missy S - October 7, 2009

Let’s see… I have a TON of books I’m looking forward to. I already read On the Edge by Ilona and it’s AMAZING. I can’t wait to get my hands on Jim’s The Mermaid’s Madness. And then Diana Pharoah Francis has her first urban fantasy Bitter Night coming out on the 27th. I’m saving my Borders Bucks for it. :)

As to birthday memories? My birthday is November 9th and I love pie. I’ve loved pie since I was a kid. At the age of 5, my mom asked me what cake I wanted for my birthday. I said pumpkin pie. She kept asking me if I was sure but I insisted so we have a picture of me in my thick pink glasses and my mom holding up a pumpkin pie with a single green candle.

I’ve had a pumpkin pie on EVERY birthday except 1 since then. It’s tradition!!

3. Kathleen - October 7, 2009

Hmm, books I’m looking forward to: well, the latest Pratchett, beyond a doubt. Jim Butcher’s First Lord’s Fury sounds like it’s going to be awesome as well (he asked what the plural of apocalypse was while writing it. Uh-oh). I’ve heard such amazing things about Mermaid’s Madness, so I can’t wait to get my hands on that.

And, of course, Tamora Pierce’s latest book, but sadly Mastiff won’t be out until next year sometime.

Not at all coincidentally, my favorite birthday memory has to do with books. I always had a treasure hunt at my birthday parties, but one year it was raining and my mom was tired, so she came up with something she called an encyclopedia treasure hunt. She wrote clues on a bunch of cards, and hid them between the pages of the encyclopedia where the answer was. So in order to find the next clue, you had to figure out what the answer was, and then go look up that entry in the encyclopedia. I ran with a smart crowd, and it was right up our alley. It helped that the prizes were books. :D

4. Shelbie Johnston - October 7, 2009

I am looking forward to Janet Evanovichs Finger Lickin Fifteen :)
My Birthday memory is when I was 8, the only time I ever had a real birthday party, where kids were invited, games etc. I will never forget that one!
Happy Birthday to you!!!

5. Shannon Baas - October 7, 2009

I remember my 12th birthday when I went to the movies and pizza with a bunch of my friends.

6. Beth C. - October 7, 2009

I’m looking forward to The Mermaid’s Madness. I enjoyed The Stepsister Scheme a great deal. I haven’t read Ilona Andrews yet, though I keep encountering her name.

Favorite birthday memory? Um. My birthday is on the 13th of a month, and I love when it falls on a Friday. I consider it good luck.

7. Leslie Price - October 7, 2009

Happy Birthday!

I used to get a birthday Apple Crisp every year starting when I was 7 because I suddenly decided I didn’t want cake!

8. Moonsanity - October 7, 2009

Happy Birthday! I love Ilona, and can’t wait to read the new book. I haven’t read anything by Jim Hines yet though. I’m rereading Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson books right now. I just finished Covet by J.R. Ward, and the first two books in Jessica Andersen’s The Final Prophecy series.

My birthday is in June and usually we are on vacation, so I pick where I want to eat, and enjoy my kids and husband:)

9. Virginia Hendricks - October 7, 2009

Hi!

My birthday is in November. During Hunting season. :)

I’m looking forward to the sequel to Strange Angels and My Soul to Take

kmcalear - October 7, 2009

Wow, I like seeing all the new commentors! Good luck in the contest.

As for my favorite birthday memory, that would be hard. My mother always made us cakes, including one year a two tiered carousel cake! I really enjoyed the Medieval Times birthday trip where I got Knighted.

10. Julie - October 8, 2009

Hee Hee! Happy Birthday! I’m looking forward to borrowing Magic Study from you in a few days as soon as I finish Poison Study.

My favorite birthday memory? Hmm.. It’s late, and I’m tired, and all I can think about is how my BEST FRIEND made me a tombstone cake for my fortieth birthday. I’m still planning my revenge. :)

11. Mardel S. - October 8, 2009

Well, I’ve just finished On The Edge by Ilona Andrews – wonderful book. And I’ve been lurking on Jim Hines’ website so I’m thinking about looking into his books-never have read him before, but that is one funny guy, so I’m betting his writing has to be pretty funny as well as all around entertaining.

I would recommend ANY of Ilona Andrew’s books to whomever enjoys urban fantasy.

A book that should be coming out very soon is the third Allie Beckstrom novel by Devon Monk- Magic in the Shadows. I’m also looking forward to Terry Pratchett’s Unseen Academicals. Both of those writers are on my “Auto-Buy” list.

12. Mardel S. - October 8, 2009

Ooh, Meant to say this also, but of course pressed send before I remembered to type it…

Happy Birthday! whatever age you are going to be, hope you have a great birthday, as well as a great birthday month!

13. Lisa Lyons - October 8, 2009

Happy birthday, sister-mine! ~HUGS~

I’m looking forward to the next series of books from Trudy Canavan. Pressures of work and such make it hard for me to take time to just sit and read. So often I find myself drawn to fast paced books, but still prefer character driven stories! I read her first trilogy, the black magician, last year and devoured the books, despite their size! Seriously looking forward to that next series.

Dave’s just finished reading Magic, poison and fire study… He loved them! The transformation of the character in the story is quite remarkable (in his words!).

I don’t really have a great birthday memory… Dave remembers from his 21st, his gift was to drive his parents to the airport!

14. Carol Lawrence - October 8, 2009

I’ve heard such amazing things about Mermaid’s Madness, so that’s what I’m looking forward to reading.

Happy Birthday to YOUUUU!!! :) Wow! So many birthdays this month. I’ve already celebrated three Oct babies’ birthdays already and we’ve only gone into 1 week of this month!!!!!

My fave birthday memory would be the one and only time I got an ice-cream cake! YUM! I love it. Hope I can get it again :)

17. Deedles - October 8, 2009

Happy Birthday!
My favorite Birthday memory was when my son gave me my very first Barbie Doll. I told him a few years before how when I was a child we didn’t have much money and I always wanted a Barbie but we could never afford one. It wasn’t so much the Barbie that made this my favorite birthday memory but the thoughtfulness of my son that I will always remember.

18. Deborah Wellenstein - October 8, 2009

Margaret Atwoods new book, The Year of the Flood, has been released, and I am looking forward to readiong it! Thanks!

21. John O - October 9, 2009

I’d have to say many of my favorite birthday memories tend to be other people’s birthdays. It’s great fun when you can get inside someone’s head just enough to find or make just the right gift.

Admittedly, some of my gifts end up looking more like mad scientist prototypes which bring on a rather different set of emotions, but every once in a while they work out great. The fruit drier has been problematic. The lit cryptonite case, however, was great.

I have a small stockpile of things made in the lair to choose from now, but there are several birthdays coming up.

John

22. Jeff - October 9, 2009

Happy Birthday!! I’m actually looking forward to both of the books in this giveaway – in my mailbox, please …

31. Sherri B. - October 11, 2009

Happy Birthday!!! My favorite birthday memory is of my 40th birthday. Believe me, I was not looking forward to it at all. I told my parents that we would just go over to their house and eat and celebrate mine and my dad’s birthday together since our days are only 4 days apart. Well, the whole day was just mopey so when it came time to go, I did go wash my face and put on some decent clothes. We drive to my parents and when we pull up I see a yard full of cars. I thought my parents had invited over a lot of their friends (which they do on a regular basis) so I was not happy. My SO says “who is that coming across the yard?” I look and it is my godson running towards me. I knew right then it was a surprise party for me. What a great ending to a not so fantastic day!!!!!

33. wendy wallach - October 11, 2009

The birthday memory that sticks out for me has to be when I was turning 29. I was just about to give birth to my daughter and I remember my friend taking me out to dinner and me waddling in order to get to and from the car!

Happy Birthday, Jana. I remember the year my family took me to Catalina Island for my birthday. We took the boat over and stayed in a hotel with a kitchenette. We rented a golf cart and one day we went snorkeling. Lots of fun!!!! I hope your Birthday is even better.
