Hi there - I really agree that the series is awfully formulaic. Although if there's nothing else to read, the fifth book Audacious (which is as far as far I got) is almost worth reading. But, if you do like the formula, Elizabeth Moon has written quite a few books that bring the characters to life much more excitingly.

I'm currently studying this book and I have to say that I agree with you about the characterization. I have trouble identifying with any of them too *because* they are so polarized. Yeah, I can completely see what you mean - although the book is great to read in terms of its societal context and style (it's the first book in the genre of magic realism that I have read, and I find that literary technique really interesting) it does get a bit irritating when the characters do not resonate with you. Good review, BTW. :)

I don't quite agree with this view. Certainly, passion and enthusiasm for good poetry is a pre-requisite for honest criticism but I think, a conscious decision to make ones criticism a artistic entity in itself is distracting from the primary focus of the critique. I do, of course, believe that clarity and precision are essential and, in that sense, the critique should be a pleasure to read.

My handwriting was... passable... in mine, I think. I will admit I did wonder if he'd not be able to read some of the words, but I tried. Welcome to the blog, sydb, and thanks for your comment! Was there a line in particular that stood out to you that you feel comfortable sharing? Otherwise thanks for weighing in, it's good to know guys keep the letters too! Mine got lost in one of the 5 or 6 moves.

I recieved a love letter once, from my first girlfriend, about two years ago. It was the most touching thing that I'd ever read, we broke up shortly after, for reasons I wont get into.

I still read it now and then.

Recently it inspired me to teach myself calligraphy. My handwriting has always been rather shocking, and I agree, I think there is a rather sentimental beauty in letter writing.

Interesting post, great blog too!

I totally agree with the writing critique but even ignoring that, I couldn't get past they high jerk ratio. Indeed, I couldn't find anybody to like in the book and didn't make it past the first few chapters.

That's a fascinating observation. I don't typically listen *and* read a book. Usually it's one or the other. I recognize that listening is heavily dependent on the talent of the narrator but I only ever considered that a possible detraction.

BTW, I've listened to all the Sookie Stackhouse books and thoroughly enjoyed them all, (so far).

* My kids are stinking cute. I was watching my youngest tonight as he said the family prayer and I almost couldn't keep myself from giggling. His eyes were screwed tightly shut. His little freckled nose wiggled as he thought. I squirmed with delight.
* I like kisses. I need more of them.
* In the evening, after everyone is in bed and the house is quiet, has to be the best time of day.
* I can't stop thinking about the sheets at the hotel Mark and I stayed at last week. I must find out where they bought them. They were the best sheets ever.
* The irony of panning a book in a review I've done and then when returning it to the library being fined for spilling a liquid in an inconspicuous place. It's a hardback. I have to pay $25. Sigh.
